Things to do near Tramway Cottages

Our traditionally built cottages are situated in the 200 year old historic conservation village of Ellenabeich. The village is nestled beneath the rolling hills of Dunmor, right on the shore of the Atlantic ocean, and looks out to the Firth of Lorne and the Inner Hebrides. It is exceptionally picturesque and has been the setting for a number of films including, "Kidnapped", "Ring of Bright Water", and the BBC "Para Handy" series.

The area is rich in its Slate Industrial Heritage and embodies its own unique atmosphere. Fishing, bird watching, hill walking, sailing and diving are just a few of the actively pursued interests. For the golf enthusiasts there is a nine hole course just two miles from Ellenabeich. Further afield and a short drive away can be found some of Scotland’s unrivalled heritage. From Magnificent Castles, Ancient Fortresses and the prehistoric stone markers of Kilmartin Glen, a wealth of the area’s fascinating history awaits the traveller.

Ellenabeich has several craft shops, a micro-brewery and Oyster Bar which also serves meals and the An-Cala Gardens which is part of Scotland’s garden scheme. We also have a Heritage Museum that depicts the way of life when the area was a thriving Slate Quarry Industry.

Four miles along the road is "Tigh an Truish" Hotel/Pub and the famous "Bridge Over the Atlantic" built in 1792 and described as the only bridge that crosses the Atlantic. This bridge connects the mainland to the Isle of Seil where Ellenabeich is situated.

The ferry ride from the old slate pier to Easdale Island takes only a few minutes and transports you to another world where there are no cars, just natural paths that criss-cross the Island. The pub and restaurant are the centre of the Island’s active and varied social life and the award winning Folk Museum attracts many visitors from all parts of the world. The recently renovated community hall hosts a varied arts program attracting performers and theatre groups from all over the UK and beyond.

A must for every visitor is a trip with Sea.fari Adventures which operate from Ellenabeich harbour. Sea.fari take small groups out on powerful RIBS to visit neighbouring islands, the wild life & the world famous Gulf of Corryvreckan, with it’s huge whirlpools!
